The fall season is almost here which can only mean one thing, the NBA season is just around the corner. NBA training camps will be underway soon and the Toronto Raptors will be starting their own camp in just a couple of weeks. Another fresh Toronto Raptors squad will be making a return to Halifax, Nova Scotia under new general manager Masai Ujiri. The team will be back for a portion of their training camp on October 4th and 5th. The Raptors held their training camp here in Halifax last season at the Canada Games Centre. There will be two practices on the Friday with an intra-squad game on Saturday, October 5th at the Halifax Metro Centre.
Toronto announced today that they signed three players in time for their training camp: Julyan Stone (G), Carlos Morais (G) and a familiar face to the Raptors, Chris Wright who participated in the Raptors training camp last year. Wright was cut just before the regular season but spent time in the D-League with the Maine Red Claws. Wright made his return with the Raptors as a member of this year's summer league team. We talked with Chris Wright at last year's training camp here in Halifax.
Julyan Stone brings some depth at the point guard spot behind Kyle Lowry and DJ Augustin. Stone went undrafted in 2011 and played 26 games with the Denver Nuggets (2011-13). Carlos Morais is a 6'4" shooting guard from Angola. He was the 2013 Afrobasket MVP and competed in the 2008 Summer Olympics for Angola. These guys will likely be competing for one of the last roster spots for this upcoming regular season.
The Raptors will be interesting to watch this season with another revamped roster under coach Dwane Casey. With Andrea Bargnani now with the New York Knicks, Rudy Gay back for another season, new acquisitions in Tyler Hansborough, Steve Novak, DJ Augustin and a bigger, stronger Jonas Valanciunas back for his sophomore season, we may be in for another unpredictable year.
